The Jail System
There are 127 jail facilities throughout California's 58 counties with a combined rated capacity of 86,535 inmates. The Corrections Standards Authority establishes jail standards and conducts inspections but does not have enforcement authority. (2007)
The Prison System
The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation manages 99 facilities with a staff of 67,224. The DOC manages 173,670 inmates. (2008)
The Community Corrections System
A total of 58 county probation agencies supervise 325,069 adult probationers. Funding comes primarily from county governments and offender fees. The Division of Adult Parole Operations, within the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, supervises 120,753 parolees. (2008)
