ANNOTATION: Stating that the extent to which mentally ill inmates are subject to abuse or neglect remains unknown, the GAO discusses that the Protection and Advocacy for Mentally Ill Individuals Act of 1986 would have to be amended in order to extend coverage to mentally ill individuals in federal facilities. The report suggest that the National Institute of Mental Health improve available data through improved reporting systems with Protection and Advocacy Systems for the Mentally Ill.
