ANNOTATION: On June 6, 1997, the nation's first Mental Health Court was established in Broward County, Florida to address the unique needs of the mentally ill in the criminal justice system. This report provides information and statistics on how this Court has performed over a calendar year. The Court has an average of 69 cases per month under its jurisdiction. Nine percent of the cases were deemed inappropriate for the Court to hear. Five percent were returned to jail.
