Criminal Victimization and Perceptions of Community Safety in 12 Cities, 1998
Publication year:
1999
| Cataloged on:
Oct. 31, 2006
ANNOTATION: Surveys are a valuable way to solicit feedback and promote community participation. The Random Digit Dialing (RDD) Telephone Methodology using the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) and community questions at the local level was assessed. Significant benefits in using this survey format were demonstrated. RDD using NCVS can be very effective in collecting information on criminal victimizations, citizen attitudes toward and their willingness to report crimes to the police, and the impact of community policing. The survey found that the violent crime rate per 1,000 persons age 12 or older range from 60 to 85 across the 12 surveyed cities, and that findings from the 12 cities did not differ greatly from findings among all urban areas.
