An Alternative Sentencing Program for Criminal Offenders: Changing Lives Through Literature
Publication year:
1997
| Cataloged on:
Oct. 31, 2006
ANNOTATION: Providing information on an innovative sentencing alternative, this website offers insight into this successful program. The program itself is built upon a series of literature seminars that enhance offenders' cognitive abilities and moral conscience. Seminar attendance is mandated by a judicially centered probation contract. Findings demonstrate that judicial sponsorship of such a program has reduced recidivism. Only 18.75% of program participants were convicted of new crimes while the comparison group had a rate of 45%. The percentage of program participants that committed a violent offense was 3.13% compared to 12.5% of the comparison group.
