ANNOTATION: Youth gang problems in the United States are substantial and impact communities of all types. Gang activities occur in 74% of large cities, 57% of suburban counties, 34% of small cities, and 25% of rural counties. In 1996, 846,428 gang members were active in 30,818 gangs. The vast majority (71%) of gang members are 15-24 years old. Females account for only 10% of gang members. Caucasians account for 14% of gang members. Primary criminal activities of young gang members include larceny/theft, aggravated assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft. Youth gang members are not extensively involved in robbery. Forty-three percent of drug sales involve gangs.
