DUI/Drug Courts: Defining a National Strategy
Publication year:
1999
| Cataloged on:
Feb. 16, 2010
ANNOTATION: Steps to curb DUI have had less significant results with repeat offenders and heavy drinkers. Addicted offenders are not influenced by traditional methods. A new approach has been suggested utilizing the successful drug court model. Benefits include integration of treatment with system processing, a non-adversarial approach, early identification, continuum of services, frequent monitoring, ongoing judicial interaction, and community partnerships. Challenges to implementation include funding, 'soft on crime' perspective, and a delay syndrome. Descriptions of seven DUI/drug court programs and a SWOT analysis are included.
