ANNOTATION: Criminals sentenced recently to prison will serve significantly longer actual time being incarcerated than in the past 20 years. The average prison sentence for all crime types combined is 5.4 years, an increase of 218% in 10 years. Violent offenders will serve 8.6 years (a ten year increase of 132%) on average. Armed robbery offenders will serve an average of 10.2 years (a 264% increase) compared to a 20 year low of 2.8 years 11 years ago. Burglary offenders, on average, will serve 5.0 years of a 317% increase from 10 years ago. Auto theft offenders will serve an average of 3.0 years (a 10 year increase of 200%).
