ANNOTATION: Between 1989 and 1993, the increase in female juvenile arrests was more than double (23%) the rate for males (11%). Violent crime among girls has increased more (16.5%) than the rate for boys (4.5%) over the last decade. This publication provides information on promising gender-specific programming practices for girls who are already involved in the juvenile justice system or are at risk of delinquency. Successful programs boost girls' confidence and skills at the critical point of adolescence, and prepare them for a positive transition to womanhood. Staff need to positively interact with the youth and be "authentic."
