ANNOTATION: While considerable knowledge has been gained about women and addiction, little has been done to show what works best to help women offenders in the criminal justice system overcome their substance abuse. This publication shares new knowledge generated from nine selected women's programs. Document contents include: women offenders and addiction -- research findings; specific treatment approaches; systems planning for a continuum of care; clinical issues in treating women offenders; program design; stages in the treatment/accountability continuum of care (screening and assessment, in-custody treatment, transition/pre-release planning, and post-release treatment and continuing care; critical issues in implementing programs; summaries of CSAT women's programs for offenders; and additional resources.
