The Effects of Prison Sentences on Recidivism

ANNOTATION: Fifty studies dating from 1958 were analyzed using quantitative methods to determine whether prison reduced criminal behavior or recidivism. The results show that prison produced slight increases in recidivism. There was also a tendency for lower risk offenders to be negatively affected by being in prison. Some conclusions based on this data include: one cannot expect that prison will reduce criminal behavior; and prison should be used to incapacitate chronic, higher risk offenders for reasonable periods and to exact retribution.
