ANNOTATION: Between 1996 and 1997, there was a 1.6% decrease in the total number of juvenile gangs, and a decrease of 3.5% in the total number of juvenile gang members. With this decline came an increase in the number of gang members in small cities and rural counties. Youth gangs were involved in 18% of homicides nationwide. The decrease in percentage of criminal juvenile gang activity was: larceny/theft, 10%; aggravated assault, 5%; burglary, 4%; motor vehicle theft; 3%; and robbery, 2%. U.S. youth gangs involved in the street sale of drugs were estimated to be 42%, with 33% involved in drug distribution to generate profits for the gang. Sixty-six percent of law enforcement agencies have specialized gang response units.
