ANNOTATION: Statistics from the 1997 LEMAS survey are organized according to the following areas: personnel, expenditures and pay, operations, community policing, equipment, computers and information systems, and written policy directives. Highlights include: as of June 1997, an estimated 531,496 people worked full-time in local police departments, with 420,000 individuals being sworn personnel; total operating expenses were up 8% since 1993 to $29.2 billion per FY97; 91% of departments were the primary criminal investigating agency in their jurisdiction; 9 in 10 local police officers worked for a department with some type of community policing plan; 94% of departments (employing 98% of all police officers) authorized the use of semiautomatic sidearms; one or more types of computers were used by nearly all departments serving a population of 2,500 or more; and 93% of all departments had a written policy on pursuit driving.
