Half-Truths: The Complicated Story of D.C.'s Halfway House "Escapees"

Publication year: 1999 | Cataloged on: Oct. 31, 2006
ANNOTATION: Halfway houses serve a vital function as being a place that exists between incarceration and successful re-entry into the community. The District of Columbia has seen its share of problems with halfway house administration, but the extent of these difficulties has been seriously misrepresented in the Washington Post. Of the 376 people reported as escaping during a three month period, 236 individuals were awaiting trial and can not be termed "escapees." Eighty-seven percent were accused of non-violent offenses, with two individuals convicted of violent felonies remaining at large (less than 1%). The public was misinformed as to the extent of potentially dangerous individuals roaming about the community.
