Publication year: 1999 | Cataloged on: Oct. 31, 2006
ANNOTATION: Studies that demonstrate that childhood abuse is a factor in subsequent criminality are discussed. An NIJ-sponsored study showed that a child experiencing abuse or neglect was 53% more likely to be arrested as a juvenile, 38% more as an adult, and 38% more for a violent crime. Adult male felons from a New York medium security facility reported a childhood abuse or neglect rate of 68.4% overall, with 64.5% having experienced physical abuse. A report on adult female inmates in Texas showed that 57.4% experienced deprivation and/or abuse as children. A 1992 study revealed that childhood abuse can increase delinquency and adult criminality by 40%.
