ANNOTATION: There are 237 county jails in Texas with 116 having 1-50 beds. Statewide, the process for determining if an inmate is mentally ill consists of 3 stages -- intake screening, follow-up assessment, and psychiatric assessment. Most larger jails employ an on-site mental health professional, have qualified professionals conduct follow-up assessments, and offer psychiatric assessments. Most jails share mental health information with other appropriate agencies/organizations. Some form of mental health information is computerized in 50% of the jails. The study found problems in population estimates, availability of mental health data, and the nature and quality of mental health services being offered.
