The State Jail System Today: An Update

Publication year: 2000 | Cataloged on: Oct. 31, 2006
ANNOTATION: State Jail Felonies are sentencing categories created in 1993 that divert from prison low level drug offenders and property offenders. Some offenders may have to serve part of their sentence in a State Jail. State Jails save Texas taxpayers $70 million in incarceration costs per year. Most of those confined in State Jails (70%) have no prior incarceration record. At the end of August 1999, 78.1% of state jail felons were on probation, 18.5% and 3.4% were serving time, respectively, in state jails and county jails. For state jail felons there is no parole; they must serve all of their sentences.
