ANNOTATION: While advocates have reasoned that reducing overcrowding and cost in prison operations can be best realized by privatization, more than a decade of experience with for-profit corrections facilities has not produced clear evidence for these rationalizations. This report calls for an end to for-profit private prisons by exploring the facts surrounding privatization. Report contents include: the industry; ways to privatize; for-profit prisons do not provide measurable cost savings; for-profit prisons raise quality concerns; for-profit prisons threaten public safety; and conclusion.
