ANNOTATION: Public opinion can greatly impact the way sex offenders are supervised and treated within the community. This document examines the lessons learned by using public opinion to influence sex offender management policies and procedures. Contents include: why the public's perspective is important -- boundaries of political permission, misperceptions, and public opinion before and after people learn more about an issue; how studies of public opinion have been used to inform, guide, and influence leaders and lawmakers, and/or to determine how to gain public support for policies and practices; viewing the public as a partner; and concluding implications.
