ANNOTATION: Examples of practices that have been successful in alleviating jail overcrowding are presented. This document contains the following chapters: introduction and overview; anatomy of the criminal justice system; information needs for a systemwide strategy; systemwide approach -- how individual actors can affect jail population; and systemwide planning to alleviate and prevent jail crowding. Appendixes contain a case-processing questionnaire, sample detention form, sample jail release form, and a list of contacts for further information.
