ANNOTATION: Findings from the 1998 National Youth Gang Survey are presented. There was a 5% decrease in the number of agencies that experienced gang activity from 1996 to 1998 (53% to 48%). The number of active gangs and gang members decreased from 1996 to 1998 (7% and 8% respectively) resulting in an estimated 28,700 gangs and 780,200 gang members. This report also contains statistics on: the prevalence of youth gangs; perception of the youth gang problem; gang member demographics; youth gangs and crime; effect on youth gangs by adults returning from prison; task force or multiagency collaboration; and defining youth gangs.
