ANNOTATION: Profiles of felons incarcerated in federal and state correctional facilities are presented. Sections of this report include results in brief, background, scope and methodology, agency comments, and GAO evaluation. The bulk of this report's information is contained in the following appendixes: objectives, scope, and methodology; BJS surveys of state and federal prison inmates; overall profile; profiles by type of current offense; profiles by race; and profiles by gender. The majority of inmates were male, minority, unmarried, between ages 25 and 45, and were employed in the month before their arrest.
