ANNOTATION: Statistics and analysis regarding jails in the U.S. are presented. During the period between 1993 and 1999: the total jail population increased 32%; five states (Montana, Utah, Wyoming, Iowa, and Mississippi) had jail population increases greater than 75%; inmate deaths reported in jails increased 42%; and the number of inmates per correctional officer increased from a ratio of 3.9 to 4.3. Report highlights are supported by an appendix of 35 tables.
