Fear of Crime and Attitudes to Criminal Justice in Canada: A Review of Recent Trends

ANNOTATION: Recent trends in Canadians' fear of crime and perception of the criminal justice system are reviewed. This report contains the following sections: purpose of report; fear of crime; perceptions of crime as a social problem; perceptions of crime trends; attitudes to punishment-related issues; and responding to public misperceptions about crime. Some highlights include: 43% of respondents feel "very safe" walking at night in their neighborhoods; 5% feel that national leaders should be primarily concerned about crime; and the amount of respondents that support capital punishment fell to an all-time low of 52%.
