ANNOTATION: Selected results from a survey regarding general performance of U.S. private prisons are reported. This paper is divided into sections on: background to the present study; survey design and results; and discussion and conclusion. One conclusion drawn from this analysis is that "[p]rivately operated prisons appear to have systemic problems in maintaining secure facilities" (p. 16).
