ANNOTATION: The effects of arrest and probation upon the criminal behavior of offenders who are serving a probation sentence is investigated. Sections of this report address: the examination of probation's effectiveness; self-report measures of criminal activity; the potential impact of probation; and research questions, methodology, results, and discussion. While there is no significant evidence of informal social controls change, a deterrent effect can be deduced from the reduction in criminal activity rates after arrest and during probation.
