ANNOTATION: Recommendations, whose implementation is justified by scientific evidence, for improving health care offered in prisons and jails are presented. The nine recommendations along with recommended actions are: surveillance promotion; clinical guidelines; immunizations; Correctional Health Care Research and National Literature Database; ethical decision making; elimination of barriers to inmate health care; improvement of health care delivery; disease prevention; and pre-release planning. An additional seven recommendations for U.S. government agencies are also provided.
