ANNOTATION: The spread of infectious diseases in the community by ex-offenders is documented. Volume 1 presents a review of research undertaken for this project. An executive summary and the following seven chapters comprise this volume: introduction; history of the project; prevalence of communicable disease, chronic disease, and mental illness among the inmate population; improving correctional health care -- a unique opportunity to protect public health; cost-effectiveness of prevention, screening, and treatment of disease among inmates; barriers to prevention, screening, and treatment -- and overcoming them; and policy recommendations.
