ANNOTATION: Results of an investigation of the effectiveness of prison education in reducing the recidivism rate of participants are reported and analyzed. The following sections are included: introduction; the University Program -- theory and practice; methodology -- Realist evaluation; the research process; results -- total group; results -- high risk offenders and the education program; results -- High Flyers and the education program; results -- "Second Chancers" and education; results -- the "Improvers" and education; discussion -- the fate of the hypothesis; and policy implications. Overall, prisoner-students had a recidivism rate of 25% three years after release on parole.
