ANNOTATION: Results from an evaluation of the Basic Skills Pathfinder, an evidence-based program to help offenders in the community improve their literacy and numeracy skills, are presented. Eight sections follow an executive summary: why does the Probation Service need a basic skills programme?; the Basic Skills Pathfinder--background, projects, and evaluation; identifying basic skill needs; profile of offenders with basic skill needs; the tuition and learning that took place; those who did not get there--the problem of attrition; how much does basic skills intervention cost?; and improving the process and increasing success. Each screening and initial assessment costs $4.60 to $17.16, while the average cost of one session of individualized teaching is $26.54.
