ANNOTATION: The prison construction boom experienced by the ten study states which had the most growth in the number of prisons from 1980 - 2000 is examined. Eight sections follow an executive summary: introduction; overall growth in the number of prisons; changes in the general population; prison growth by state; mapping county-level changes in the top 10 states; effects on small communities; mapping county of sentencing versus county of incarceration; and conclusion. The number of state prison facilities increased 67% in order to house an increase of over a million prisoners.
