The Impact and Effectiveness of Mandatory Drug Testing in Prisons

Publication year: 2005 | Cataloged on: Oct. 31, 2006
ANNOTATION: Mandatory drug testing (MDT) "intended to monitor drug-taking in custody, to deter prisoners from misusing drugs and to identify individuals in need of treatment" in prisons located in England and Wales is examined (p. 1). Eight sections follow an executive summary: introduction; overview of the research programme; drug misuse in prisons in 2001; the MDT programme; random MDT positivity rates as a measure of drug misuse; changes in the pattern of drug use on entry to prison and the impact of the MDT programme; other issues; and conclusions. The MDT seems to be reducing the use of drugs, in particular that of cannabis.
