ANNOTATION: The negative societal costs associated with the use of illicit drugs are estimated. Five sections follow an executive summary: introduction -- purpose, scope, and overview; methodology; data and estimation of base cost components; 1992-2002 estimates for overall costs, health care costs, productivity losses, costs of other effects, direct and indirect costs, and crime related costs; and further comparisons and analyses (e.g., drug abuse versus other health problems, costs in other nations, real costs 1992-2002, and discussion). Appendixes include: acronyms and abbreviations; supplemental tables for calculation of cost estimates; estimated costs in constant 2002 dollars; and estimated costs in constant 1998 dollars. "Total costs were $180.9 billion in 2002, increasing 5.34 percent annually since 1992" (p. vii).
