ANNOTATION: An overview of inmate deaths occurring from 1994 to 2003 is provided. Issues raised include: the number of custody deaths increased from 1994-2003; the custody death rate decreased from 1994-2000 then increased 2000-2003; 55 to 74-year olds had highest rate of death; the rate of deaths for whites increased 2000-2003 while the rates for blacks and Hispanics stayed the same; 55% of deaths occurred in prison; 62% of deaths were due to natural causes; most of custody deaths at city jails, juvenile facilities, squad car, street, or residence were not due to natural causes; most common means of death other than natural causes were hanging/strangulation; males have a death rate that is higher than females; most arrestees are ages 15-24 while ages 45-54 have most custody deaths; and the need for more research.
