ANNOTATION: The successful implementation of police-based diversion programs for mentally ill individuals is discussed. Four chapters are contained in this monograph: background and overview; characterizing success in specialized police-based programs; barriers to implementing and challenges to maintaining a specialized program (e.g., funding and resources, staff attitudes, staffing shortages, sharing information, and longevity); and enhancing the success of specialized programs. Sample forms included are Crisis Intervention Tracking Form (from Seminole County Sheriff's Office, FL) and Crisis Intervention Team [CIT] Report (from Lee's Summit Police Department, MO).
