ANNOTATION: The use of presentence reports (PSR) in Canada is investigated. The following sections are contained in this report: executive summary; introduction; method; results according to the participants, what the judges said, what the probation officers said, views of the lawyers, specific case analysis, PSR and non-PSR cases, PSRs and sentencing, and the resource demands of a PSR; discussion of risk assessment in the PSR, the role of offender rehabilitation, and the influence of PSRs on sentencing. An appendix provides comparative ratings of specific factors in a PSR. The most highly rated factor for judges was the offender's amendability and motivation for treatment. For probation officers, domestic violence was the top rated factor.
