Community Based Management Pilot Programs for Youth with Mental Illness Involved in the Criminal Justice System: Program Evaluation Report: Year Four, Legislative Report

Publication year: 2005 | Cataloged on: Oct. 31, 2006
ANNOTATION: Results from an evaluation of a family-focused and community-based program to reduce recidivism and out-of-home placements of mentally ill juveniles involved in the juvenile justice system are provided. This report is comprised of the following sections: executive summary; background; overview of services; revocations; new offenses; other correctional outcomes for probation supervision, detentions, and commitments and incarcerations; out of home placements and hospitalizations; other mental health outcomes; cost analysis; and recommendations. Individuals who "successfully completed the program cost an average of $5,860 in the year following treatment compared to an average of $24,317 for those that did not complete the program" (p. 5). This outcome, in addition to other positive results, adds credence to the suggestion that this pilot program should be brought to scale and expanded to cover at least 200 youth per year.
