ANNOTATION: The attainment of a reduction in the Prison Service's absence rate of 15.9 days to 9 days per person is evaluated. Sections of this report are: summary; conclusions; and recommendations; sickness absence has declined but remains high; motivating and encouraging staff to attend; implementing new systems and procedures; formal minutes; witnesses; and list of written evidence. The nine day target was not met and cost the Prison Service 30.8 million pounds.
