Drug-Related Mortality Among Newly-Release Offenders: Report of a Research Project Carried Out by the Office for National Statistics and the National Addiction Centre on Behalf of the Home Office

ANNOTATION: The prevalence and nature of drug-related mortality among recently released offenders is investigated. This report contains the following sections: executive summary; introduction; method; mortality rates; causes and circumstances of deaths; risk factors for drug-related mortality; discussion; and recommendations. While heroin or morphine were involved in 71% of the deaths, with alcohol being combined with drug use in 27% of the deaths. Based on offender type alone, sex offenders have the highest risk for drug-related death.
