ANNOTATION: The use of biomarkers to determine alcohol abuse is explained. This Advisory provides information regarding: what alcohol biomarkers are - "physiological indicators of alcohol exposure or ingestion and may reflect the presence of an alcohol use disorder" (p. 1); why alcohol biomarkers are needed; characteristics of six alcohol biomarkers; what the primary biomarkers are; how alcohol biomarkers can be used in treatment; cautions to be observed in reviewing positive biomarkers' results of individuals mandated to be abstinent; how a test cutoff value should be chosen; what recommendations can be made for using biomarkers most effectively in monitoring drinking; and what research is needed on direct alcohol biomarkers. Their use in forensic settings is premature, and they should not be used as primary evidence for legal or disciplinary action.
