ANNOTATION: The utilization of COMPSTAT (Computer Statistics or Comparative Statistics) by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) to deal with its management and performance problems is addressed. Sections following an executive summary are: COMPSTAT for corrections; the COMPSTAT system -- mission clarification, internal accountability, geographical organization of command, data-driven identification of problems and assessment of the department's problem-solving tactics, and external information exchange; and adaptation of COMPSTAT to the CDCR.
