World Prison Population List. Eighth ed.

The number of prisoners held in 218 independent countries and dependant territories is reported. Over 9.8 million people are incarcerated, with over 30% held in the Unites States. The U.S. has the highest prison population rate of 756 per 100,000 of its national population followed by Russia (629 per 100,000). Rates below 150 per 100,000 are experienced by 59% of the countries reviewed. Accession Number: 022140
