ANNOTATION: How does one evaluate research study quality? Focusing on sex offender treatment effectiveness research, the authors discuss guidelines (with broader applicability) for rating study quality. This report covers: definition of study quality; assumptions guiding the rating scheme; review of methods for rating study quality; a rating scheme specific to sex offender treatment outcome; overview of the CODC Guidelines (Collaborative Outcome Data Committee's Guidelines for the Evaluation of Sexual Offender Treatment Outcome Studies); reliability; and uses of the CODC Guidelines. The CODC developed its Guidelines in response to the heterogeneous nature of existing scales for rating study quality and need for strong conclusions relating to sex offender treatment outcomes.
