Corrections Department: Review of Facility Planning Efforts and Oversight of Private Prisons and Health Programs
Publication year:
2007
| Cataloged on:
Jun. 15, 2007
ANNOTATION: This review assesses the New Mexico Corrections Department’s “oversight of basic medical, mental health, addiction and food services to inmates; the impact and costs of contracted (private) prison facilities; and the adequacy of facility planning efforts in light of the projected 40 percent increase in the prison population over the next ten years” (p.1). This report contains the following: executive summary; background information; findings and recommendations; “Health Care in New Mexico Corrections Department Facilities” by Steven S. Spencer and B. Jaye Anno; and agency responses. A few significant findings include: private prisons in New Mexico have increased contract prices making these prisons cost more than they should; medical costs can be better controlled; and prison operations could be improved by increased focus on performance.
