ANNOTATION: "The purpose of the two projects discussed in this report was to create and validate mental health screening instruments corrections staff can use during intake" (p. ii). Sections of this publication are: about this report (summary); the Correctional Mental Health Screen (CMHS) and the Brief Jail Mental Health Screen (BJMHS); criteria for detecting mental illness in jails; different instruments for different needs; CMHS -- a gender-specific screen (development of CMHS-W and CMHS-M, validation, and assessment); BJMHS -- development, validation, and assessment; and both screens meet needs at intake. Copies of the CMHS and BJMHS are included in the appendixes.
