Sections of this publication are: about this report (summary); the Correctional Mental Health Screen (CMHS) and the Brief Jail Mental Health Screen (BJMHS); criteria for detecting mental illness in jails; different instruments for different needs; CMHS -- a gender-specific screen (development of CMHS-W and CMHS-M, validation, and assessment); BJMHS -- development, validation, and assessment; and both screens meet needs at intake. Copies of the CMHS and BJMHS are included in the appendixes.
