Overcoming Legal Impediments to Hiring Forensic Peer Specialists

ANNOTATION: Challenges of and solutions for legal impediments to the employment of Forensic Peer Specialists, ex-offenders with mental illness, are discussed. Impediments to employment include employment laws, public information, and current legal status. Strategies for avoiding impediments are awareness of employment laws and preparation for employment (e.g., providing direction, determining legal status, vacating a warrant, probation, parole, or other community corrections, and mitigating evidence).
