ANNOTATION: Results are supplied from an assessment of a specialized domestic violence probation supervision unit (DVU) and its effectiveness. In addition to an abstract and executive summary, this report includes these sections: introduction; literature review; research methods; study context -- the criminal justice response to domestic violence in Rhode Island; probationer sample; findings for DVU, probation's challenges, limitation of criminal justice responses, limitations on probation responses, and probation accountability for repeat abusers; implications of research; limitations and future research; and discussion and conclusions. "The most important finding of this research is the potential for specialized case supervision of domestic violence offenders to both diminish reoffending and delay the time to reabuse" (p. 114).
