ANNOTATION: This policy's purpose is to "establish operational guidelines for good child care practices and training to respond to the gender identity and sexual orientation of the youth in our care" (p. 1). Procedures cover: inclusive organization culture, nonuse of derogatory speech; adequate staffing to prevent harassment; respectful and inclusive terminology; nondisclosure of youths' sexual orientation or gender identity without permission; individualized classification and housing decisions; use of chosen first name and pronoun; nonuse of isolation to keep LGBTQ safe; LGBTQ do not have to have a roommate; provision of adequate adolescent development; prompt response to grievances; incident reporting form will indicate harassment incidents and disciplinary actions taken; zero tolerance for retaliation; there will be no prohibition or discouragement of communication between youth other than that prohibited by regulations; all direct staff and service providers will have training and will affirm their commitment to the provision of a safe and accepting environment for LGBTQ youth; and inappropriate employee action must be reported to both the employee's supervisor and the youth facility administrator.
