Essential Skills for New Supervisors

On September 23–24, 2009, NIC will introduce Essential Skills for New Supervisors during an 8-hour curriculum orientation and facilitator training delivered live via satellite teleconference and Internet webcast.

Making the transition from line staff to supervisor calls for developing new skills and competencies as well as a major shift in mindset from doing one’s own work to supervising the work of others.

The National Institute of Corrections has developed Essential Skills for New Supervisors, a new 36-hour DVD training program that focuses on core competencies for supervisors. These competencies include developing personal and professional goals, demonstrating leadership, solving problems, thinking critically, making decisions, managing conflict, coaching, counseling, providing discipline, and encouraging staff performance.

Objectives

Program objectives for the 2-day, 8-hour training are to:
  • Identify core competencies and skill sets for new supervisors in all correctional settings.
  • Identify key content components of the nine-module curriculum and present highlights.
  • Demonstrate how trainers can use the curriculum to train new supervisors in all correctional settings, including prisons, jails, and community corrections.
  • Offer participants a variety of practice activities that complement the supervisor competencies presented in each training module.
