The National Institute of Corrections (NIC) is seeking applications for funding under the Fiscal Year 2019 for the Alabama Department of Corrections Thinking for a Change Overview Training Project. This project furthers NIC’s mission by building capacity of state and local correctional agencies to develop and establish effective inmate cognitive behavioral rehabilitation interventions and strategies.
The goal of this project is to assist the Alabama Department of Corrections in the successful agency wide implementation of NIC’s cognitive behavioral intervention program Thinking for a Change. In order to improve program outcomes, this project will provide a strategy for training custody and support staff in the principles of cognitive behavioral intervention and build the capacity of the Alabama DOC to provide ongoing training opportunities agency wide.
In addition to the strategy and content of the program design, the successful applicant must complete the following deliverables during the project period. The narrative should reflect how the applicant will accomplish these activities.
Deliverable 1: Develop a four hour curriculum on the principles of cognitive behavioral intervention, the Thinking for a Change Overview Training.
Deliverable 2: Provide three Thinking for a Change Overview Training sessions to custody and support staff in two pilot facilities.
Deliverable 3: Provide one Thinking for a Change Overview Training for Trainers coaching session (T4T) to Alabama DOC Thinking for a Change Facilitators to enable them to train additional staff.
Deliverable 4: Provide the opportunity for the Alabama DOC Thinking for a Change Facilitators to co-facilitate the final Thinking for a Change Overview Training session.
This project will require both onsite and virtual delivery to include:
- Initial virtual planning session with NIC's project manager
- Initial virtual planning meeting with Alabama DOC Administrators and Implementation Team
- Ongoing virtual planning and development meetings as arranged by NIC's project manager using NIC’s WebEx platform
- Three day site visit to deliver Thinking for a Change Overview Training sessions and provide direct facilitation, coaching and support of Alabama DOC Thinking for a Change Facilitators.
Deliverable 6: Project Narrative: A comprehensive project summary report that includes a narrative description of the project including background, purpose, objectives, and results.
All applications are due to be submitted and in receipt of a successful validation message in Grants.gov
by 11:59 p.m. eastern time on March 18, 2019
